Pilates FAQ

What Is Pilates?

Pilates pronounced (puh-la-tees) was originally founded and developed by Joseph Pilates.  He developed a mind body exercise system to strengthen the weak and challenge the strong.  The repertoire of exercises he developed was first introduced in England during WW1 to help prisoners of war regain strength and flexibility with mobility with the innovative equipment he designed.

What Is STOTT PILATES?

“STOTT PILATES® is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. Co‑founders Moira and Lindsay G. Merrithew, along with a team of physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, have spent more than two decades refining the STOTT PILATES method of exercise and equipment. This resulted in the inclusion of modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation, making it one of the safest and effective methods available. This clear and detailed approach forms the basis for STOTT PILATES training and certification programs. It’s used by rehab and prenatal clients, athletes, celebrities and everyone in between.”

What Are The Benefits Of Pilates?

  • Improved tone and lengthening of muscles
  • Increased flexibility, mobility and strength
  • Improved muscular balance, specifically abs and back
  • Improved body mechanics
  • Reduced stress and tension
  • Total mind and body workout

How Often Should I Do Pilates To benefit?

Unlike many other forms of exercises you do not have to perform pilates daily to benefit.  I recommend 2-3 times per week to reap sustainable results in combination with a healthy active lifestyle.

Why Choose STOTT PILATES?

With all the rage in pilates and current fitness trends you can find a plethora of pilates instructors available.  Pilates instructors can instruct a class with little education and experience and it will be obvious.  Trained and certified professionals are hard to come by in this fitness market.  STOTT PILATES Instructors are held to very high standards of education and are required to absolutely know the body from the inside out.  STOTT PILATES is anatomically based with a foundation in alignment principles that are rehabilitation focused and biomechanically sound.

What Can I Expect In A Session?

Your first session will include a review of health history, goals and postural analysis.  The postural analysis is an effective tool in evaluating muscular imbalances that show up due to injuries, profession or structural differences.  This will then be used to develop a program designed to meet your needs and goals.  Every session will be 1 hour but may be shorter depending on individual client needs.  Your program will include a variety of exercises on the reformer as well as mat exercises as appropriate.
